We got the kids into a school we are very happy with! I was being to doubt that I could get that done in one week. It took a lot of visiting different schools and driving around for a couple days straight. I think I got a good feel for each school. We met the principle and she is lovely. I believe she might have been the one to pull a few strings for us.
Hanukkah was tough this year. I started out strong with new snow flakes lights from Costco to put in our windows back in WC. Then I moved on to a multi-night craft. Usually we would play games, but they were all packed. I even made sure we had some sort of GF treat each night. At some point with packing and flying I got a little too tired to keep up anything fancy. It got a lot harder to do anything more than lighting the menorah.
Dan surprised me on the last night of Hanukkah. I had not gotten around to making latkas with the kids. To be honest I have never really been a latka fan. My mom and grandma made tuna fish pancakes instead. Dan came home with ingredients to make both latkas and tuna fish pancakes for dinner. It was nice. It will be one of those memories I cherish - both of us exhausted and cooking in our tiny corporate housing apartment. And bonus, the latkas came out great! We used Pamela's GF flour mix for pancakes. The tuna fish pancakes will need a little work. I think the GF flour mix for baking made by Bobs Red Mill would have worked better. I will post the GF latka recipe we used later. We opened a couple presents. Dan got me a DVD player, but I think it might have been more for him and the kids - since so far they are the only ones to use it. ;-)
Still no new snow. I am thinking that might not be a bad thing. I saw a news report on TV with snow plows and traffic for a city further north... I started thinking about trying to drive the kids places. Yikes. That is all I have to say.
Oh! Tried a Long Island Ice Tea at the local Ruby Tuesdays. It was okay. I swear they put 7 up in it. Otherwise, still had the desired affect. ;-)
Speaking of which, Ruby Tuesdays has a GF menu! AND for the first time ever a waiter asked about bringing free bread to the table BEFORE doing it. Saved us that awkward moment where everyone at the table looks at the bread like there is a tiny devil dancing around manically laughing. Not to mention this saved me the moment where Ramona immediately starts campaigning for bread and I have to figure out what makes the most sense. Is it fair for Ramona to have bread in front of her sister? What is good for one kid is not necessarily great for the other. I still have not found a great compromise to many of the new situations I find our family in since Celiacs became a reality. I hope more restaurant start to think ahead like this one waiter did. I very much appreciated being asked.
